FAQs
What is the Lansing Promise?
The Lansing Promise is a place-based scholarship program that helps eligible students who live and attend school within the Lansing School District pursue education and career training after high school. The program provides financial support for college degrees, career certificates, skilled trades programs, and certain professional licensing programs.
Who is eligible for the Lansing Promise scholarship?
Students who live, attend, and graduate within the Lansing School District boundaries from 9th through 12th grade may qualify for the full Lansing Promise Scholarship. Students who live and attend school in the district for at least one full academic year and graduate may qualify for the Lansing Promise Guarantee. Eligibility includes graduates from public, private, charter, online, homeschool, or GED programs within the district boundaries.
How much financial support can students receive?
Eligible students can receive up to $20,000 toward a bachelor’s degree at select partner universities or up to $10,000 for an associate’s degree or credential at Lansing Community College. The scholarship can also support certain professional licensing programs and approved skilled-trades training programs in Michigan.
What schools or programs can Lansing Promise scholarships be used for?
Lansing Promise scholarships can be used at several partner institutions and training programs, including Lansing Community College and selected Michigan universities such as Michigan State University, The University of Olivet, and Davenport University. Funds may also be used for approved skilled trades programs and some career licensing programs in Michigan.
Do students still need to complete the FAFSA?
Yes. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year to remain eligible. Lansing Promise is considered a last-dollar scholarship, meaning federal and state financial aid are applied first, and Lansing Promise funds help cover remaining eligible education costs.
When do students need to start using their scholarship?
Students must begin using their Lansing Promise scholarship within two years of graduating from high school. Once activated, they typically have up to six years to use the funds toward completing their approved program or degree.
